"The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn the more places you'll go." ~ Dr. Seuss
As a Kindergarten teacher I feel that all children can learn to read and write...at their own level. I also believe that children learn through play. Research has been found that playing is a natural way for children to learn because they are using all of their senses. Play is a cognitive learning exercise where children can practice taking information and organizing it to solve problems. It also helps with building their self-confidence and improving their language and motor skills. This time in my classroom is called "work stations". During this time the children are engaged alone, with their peers, with me, or with the Title I teacher in activities such as the writing station, ABC/word study station, math station, Stix station, playdough station, creation station, computer station, or chromebook station.
Parents play a critical role in their child's success. There are many activities that can be done with children to help them develop into the best reader and writer they can be. Some of these are:
- Read to your child everyday
- Let your child see you read and write
- Sing songs and recite rhymes daily
- Read road and business signs to and with your child while driving
- Let your child help with making the grocery list-even if it is just pictures
